Mockingbird

Former Caedmon’s Call singer/songwriter Derek Webb’s new CD "Mockingbird" is great. With the musical style of a raw Caedmon’s Call album and the lyrical honesty that speaks truth into some of Christianity’s dark places, this album really has hit home with me.

Favorite lyrics:

"my first allegiance is not to a flag, a country, or a man
my first allegiance is not to democracy or blood
    it’s to a king & a kingdom"
    – from A King and A Kingdom

"don’t teach me about moderation and liberty
i prefer a shot of grape juice

don’t teach me about loving my enemies
don’t teach me how to listen to the Spirit
just give me a new law"
    – from A New Lew

His honesty hits to the core of some of the questions I ask about the Church, about my faith. I appreciate his ability to challenge what he doesn’t agree with, while maintaining his focus on Christ as the center and the direction.
